Biography

Stanley Thornton Fox (SN 1549) was born in Ballarat but the 27 year old bootmaker enlisted in Liverpool NSW, on December 10th 1914. He embarked from Sydney on board the Seang Choon in February 1915 and by June was serving with the 3rd Battalion at Gallipoli. He was evacuated to hospital in August, first to Mudros, then to England, where he spent the next twelve months training, in between hospital visits for various ailments and his February marriage to Hettie Jackson in Manchester. In October 1916, he was transferred to France where he was wounded in action in May 1917, suffering "gunshot back - severe". Transferred to England to recover, he was discharged from hospital in July. During the three months before he returned to France, he was disciplined twice for being absent without leave, for five and twelve days. In spite of these and a couple of earlier leave indiscretions, he was appointed Lance Corporal in July 1918. Not long after the Armistice, he was again admitted to hospital suffering accidental burns to his hands and was once more invalided to England. He returned to Australia on board the Bremen, disembarking in Sydney in July 1919 and was discharged on January 27th 1920 as "medically unfit - disability".
