Biography

Herbert Leslie Halse (SN 113), Ballarat born, was a 21 year old dairyman when he enlisted on August 19th 1914. On October 19th he embarked aboard the Wiltshire with the first ANZAC fleet. He served at Gallipoli with the 2nd Field Ambulance. In March 1916 he was moved to France where he was wounded in action, shell shocked, on July 26th. He was evacuated to hospital in England where he also developed bronchitis. Health problems continued until it was decided he should return to Australia on transport duty. He returned on the Nestor and disembarked on September 24th 1917. He was discharged on November 7th ‘medically unfit, disability’.
