Biography

Charles William Barnett (SN 1108), born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old miner from Sebastopol when he enlisted on January 14th 1915. As a reinforcement for the 8th Light Horse Regiment, he embarked aboard the Kyarra on August 20th. He was wounded at Gallipoli, suffering a shrapnel wound to the back and evacuated to hospital in Egypt. He returned to duty in June 1916 and in September he was again wounded suffering a mild gunshot wound to his shoulder. In March 1917 he was transferred to the Anzac Provost Corps with policing duties. In August of that year, he was appointed as a driver in the Australian Mounted Division, still in the Middle East, but a month later malaria saw him hospitalised. He returned to Australia on the Leicestershire, disembarked at Melbourne on January 22nd 1919 and was discharged shortly after.
