Ernest George Jones (SN 1326) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Pleasant Street State School. As an 18 year old labourer he enlisted in Ballarat on March 20th 1916 and embarked on May 20th aboard the Ascanius and sailed to England. Initially posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion he also served with the 8th Battalion and then the 46th Battalion. Aside from a brief period in France, his service was dominated by charges for being absent without leave and an associated period of detention. He returned to Australia aboard the Demosthenes and was discharged on April 9th 1919.
