Oliver Charles Phillips (SN 15541) was born in Ballarat and attended the Dana Street State School. He was a 21 year old teacher at Lake charm near Kerang when he enlisted on May 2nd 1916. He embarked on October 21st aboard the Port Melbourne and sailed to England where he underwent further training. In July 1917 he crossed to France to join the 3rd Division Signal Company as a driver. His service appeared to be incident free and he returned to Australia on the Rio Pardo disembarking on July 18th 1919. He was discharged three weeks later on September 5th.
