John Cameron (SN 2324) born in Smythesdale, was a married 35 year old mechanic when he enlisted in the Australian Flying Corps in Melbourne on August 27th 1917. Prior to enlisting in the AIF he served in South Africa for 12 months. He embarked aboard the Port Sydney from Melbourne on November 9th, reaching England on January 9th 1918. He served in England as an Air Mechanic with the AFC School of Instruction and then with the 5th Training Squadron. He returned to Australia aboard the Kaiser-i-Hind, disembarked on June 16th 1919 and was discharged on July 9th.
