George Henry Gardiner Crompton was born in Ballarat but enlisted in South Africa where he served with the Natal Light Horse and the 3rd South African Infantry Battalion (SN 1017). He was wounded in action in July 1916 and suffered a serious bout of dysentery in the months after the war. He died in South Africa on April 18th 1929.
