Biography

William Thomas (SN 7093) born at Ballarat, was a 28 year old saddler when he enlisted in Melbourne on October 17th 1916. As a reinforcement for the 14th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Medic on December 16th and sailed to England. On July 7th 1917 he was transferred to the 17th Field Ambulance Brigade then on July 18th he married Ida Kneebone in Exeter. In November 1917 he crossed to the battlefields of France to serve with the 4th Field Ambulance Brigade. His service was marked by several minor charges of being absent without leave but he avoided serious illness or injury. When the war ended, with Ida, he returned to Australia aboard the Ceramic, disembarked on September 27th 1919 and was discharged on December 28th.
