Biography

Christina Middlemist Archibald was born in 1881 at Ballarat East, Victoria to parents, George and Helen Archibald (née Middlemist) and was the ninth of ten children born to the couple (two children had died within days of their births in 1867 and 1868). Christina was only two years old when an older brother, Alexander died aged 12 years and just five years later in 1888 her father George died.
Christina was nursing at the Gippsland Hospital, Sale in 1915 and when she enlisted in the AIF Nursing Services on 14 August 1916, she was a professional nurse with No.11 Australian General Hospital and listed her address as that of her mother, brother Henry and sister Sarah in Soldiers Hill, Ballarat North. She embarked at Melbourne aboard Orsova on 6 December 1916 and arrived at Plymouth on 17 February 1917, then went on to London. A week later, Christina proceeded overseas to France and was posted to the 13th Stationary Hospital on 1 March 1917. Nine months later, Staff Nurse Archibald was posted for duty to the 25th General Hospital on 9 December 1917. Christina was herself hospitalised a number of times during 1918 suffering from pleurisy and on 7 May 1918 she was invalided to a convalescent home in England. By 31 July 1918, Christina was invalided back to Australia aboard Malta still suffering from pleurisy and disembarked on the 28 September 1918. She was discharged at Melbourne on 30 May 1921.
Christina Archibald did not marry and spent the rest of her life living in Brighton, Victoria before moving to Elsternwick, Victoria for the last years of her life. She died at East Malvern, Victoria on 26 February 1962 and was buried in a family grave at the Buninyong Cemetery, Victoria.
