Biography

Albert Leslie King (SN 100) was born at Clunes and attended the Clunes State School. He enlisted in Ballarat as a 33 year old draughtsman and fitter on November 21st 1914, joining the 8th Light Horse Regiment. His unit embarked from Melbourne in late February 1915 on board the Star of Victoria and landed at Gallipoli in May to serve, without their horses, as infantry men. He took part in the tragic charge at The Nek in August then illness forced his evacuation to Egypt in October. After Gallipoli his unit was deployed protecting the Suez Canal and in the Sinai. He was wounded in action on November 12th 1917 at Menashe, north of Beersheba, and died the following day. He has no known grave and is listed on the Jerusalem Memorial in Palestine.
