Alfred William Rachinger (SN 3132/Lt.) was born at Creswick and was a 21 year old butcher when he enlisted on July 17th 1915. In September he left Australia aboard the Osterley to serve with the 6th Infantry Battalion. On June 13th 1916 he was wounded in action but remained on duty in France. Shortly after this he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to the Officer Cadet Battalion in England. In July 1917 he was commissioned as a lieutenant and in March 1918 he rejoined his battalion in France. He suffered a serious gunshot wound to the chest on September 16th 1918 which effectively ended the war for him. He returned to Australia aboard the Takada, disembarking on February 11th 1919.
