Biography

John Frederick Steward (SN 2796) born in Ballarat, was a 25 year old bootmaker when he enlisted in Melbourne on the 2nd of August 1915. He joined the 23rd Battalion, 6th Reinforcements, and embarked from Melbourne in October on board the Ulysses. On arrival in Egypt he was transferred to the 60th Infantry Battalion and moved to France in late June 1916. He was killed in action on July 19th 1916 at Fromelles. He has no known grave and is remembered on the memorial at V.C Corner Cemetery, Fromelles, France.

While having a connection to Ballarat, John Steward is one of a number who served in the AIF but are not recognised with a tree in the Avenue.
