John Stewart (SN 2007) was born at Dean near Ballarat and attended Dean State School. 25 years old, he was employed as a police constable at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne on July 6th 1915. He departed Melbourne with the 22nd Battalion twelve months later on board the Ajana. After six months training in England, he was posted to France with the 58th Battalion in March 1917. He was promoted to Corporal, then Sergeant before he was killed in action at Passchendaele on October 25th 1917. He has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.
