Biography

Leslie Willam Stewart (SN 2328) was born in Ballarat but was working as a porter on the South Australian Railways when the 26 year old enlisted in Adelaide on january 17th 1916. He left Adelaide with the 9th Light Horse Regiment on board the Bakara in April. He served at Australian Headquarters in Egypt for most of the war during which time he was promoted to Warrant Officer. In June 1919 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal 'in recognition of valuable service rendered'. He left Egypt for the UK in September 1919 and returned to Australia in December. He was discharged from the AIF on February 26th 1920.
