Biography

Lewis James Stewart was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Farmer when he enlisted with the 23rd Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 13 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 27 September 1915. His records who little activity until 20 March 1917, when it was reported he was missing in action as a prisoner of war. A later entry shows he was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to the head prior to his capture.

It was later reported he returned to Australia aboard the Khyber on 31 March 1919.
