Edgar James Ellis MM (SN13040) was born in London but was a 30 year old miner from Brown Hill, married to Laura, when he enlisted on March 31st 1916. He Joined the Australian Army Medical Corps and embarked from Melbourne on June 20th and travelled to France. In July 1917 his outstanding gallantry at Messines in Belgium earned him a Military Medal. He returned safely to Australia after the war and died in Ballarat in 1965 aged 79.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Edward J. Ellis.
