William James Fargher (SN 5083) was born in Sydney but enlisted in Ballarat as a 19 year old turner on February 15th 1916. He embarked aboard the Suffolk on April 1st and sailed via Egypt to England. In November 1916 he crossed to France to serve with the 1st Anzac Cyclists Battalion. In March 1918 he was transferred to the Australia Corps Signals Company. Aside from some bouts of minor illness, he came through the war without major incident and departed England aboard the Norman on July 4th 1919. He reached Melbourne six weeks later and was discharged on October 10th 1919.
