Elliot David Osmond Mitchell (SN 3269) born at Glenthompson, was a 20 year old farm labourer when he enlisted in Hamilton on March 14th 1916. On July 4th he embarked aboard the Berrima and in November he reached France to serve with the 29th Infantry Battalion. In April 1917 he suffered a shrapnel wound to his thigh then in September a more severe shrapnel wound to his buttock. He was evacuated to hospital in England. Once recovered he attended a Signal School until he rejoined his unit in France in September 1918. He was then transferred to the 32nd Battalion for the final month of the war. He returned to Australia aboard the Aeneas, disembarked at Melbourne on January 9th 1920 and was discharged on March 2nd. He enlisted again (SN V390185) to serve during World War 2.
