Biography

Frederick William Vale was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was married to Mary Vale of Howitt Street, Ballarat, and was an engine driver when he enlisted with the No 4 Tunnelling Company and 1st Reinforcements (May 1916) on 25 March 1916 at the age of 39. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A69 Warilda on 25 May 1916. He was reclassified as a Sapper with the 3rd Tunnelling Company (and later the 5th Tunnelling Company) , but was found to be suffering from dyspnoea (shortness of breath) and tachycardia (rapid heartbeat). He returned to Australia 25 August 1917 being found fit for home servic e but unfit for general service.
