Jonah Ward was born in Creswick, Victoria, was single and living with his mother, Mrs M A Ward of Howitt Street, Ballarat North, Victoria, and was a lineman when he enlisted with the Howitzer Brigade 22, Reinforcement 4 on 1 February 1916 at the age of 26. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A67 Orsova on 29 July 1916. He proceeded overseas to France aboard the Princess Clementine. He spent some time in hospital as sick, being admitted on 19 April 1918, and embarked for England for return to Australia on 6 December 1918. On 7 June 1919 he was found medically unfit and was discharged.
