Biography

John Charles McNicol Turnbull (SN 241) was born in Horsham and attended the Rushworth State School. He enlisted in Horsham on 6th October 1914 as a 28 year old bricklayer, married to Mary. He was allocated to the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked aboard the Ascanius in late May 1916, first to England and then to France in November. 0n April 30th 1917 he was severely wounded at Messines and died of his wounds on May 2nd 1917. He is buried in Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.
