George Smith (SN 5704) was born in Richmond, but was employed as a milk carter in Ballarat when he enlisted on March 27th 1916. Single and 30 years old, he was posted to the 21st Infantry Battalion and sailed from Melbourne on board the Shropshirein late September. After a few weeks training in England, he joined his unit on the battlefields of France in February 1917. On May 20th 1918 he died of wounds received in the Hazebrouck area, and is buried in the Querrieu British Cemetery, France.
