Biography

William Arthur Sandall was born in Carron, VIC and was a Clerk by trade when he enlisted in the 58th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 20 June 1916 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916. On September 25th 1917 he was wounded in action, suffering mild gunshot wounds to his abdomen and scalp. He rejoined his unit a month later and continued to serve until he was gassed on April 25th 1918 during the liberation of Villers-Bretonneux. He was evacuated from the battlefield and effectively his war was over.
