Biography

George Gribbon Sutcliffe was born in Coburg, Victoria, was single and a Clerk when he enlisted with the Army Field Post Office Details (November 1915) on 3 August 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Medina on 2 November 1915. He was promoted to Corporal on 8 March 1916. He was again promoted to Sergeant in November 1916 and proceeded overseas to France for duty. According to his records he completed his service without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia aboard the Karmala on 2 July 1919 with the rank of Company Sergeant Major.

His brother, Pte John Bertram Sutcliffe, 3rd Pioneer Bn, returned to Australia, 2 April 1919 also served. Tree No. 3449
