Biography

Edwin George Bernard Whiting (SN 121), born in Ballarat, was a 28 year old engine driver when he enlisted in Geelong on February 18th 1916. Posted to the 3rd Pioneer Battalion he embarked aboard the Wandilla on June 6th but en route to England he was disciplined for going absent without leave for six hours at Cape Town. He reached France in late November. On June 13th 1917 he was wounded in action, suffering a gunshot wound to his right arm but was able to rejoin his unit three months later. At the war’s end he returned aboard the Somali, disembarked Melbourne on February 8th 1919 and was discharged on June 3rd ‘medically unfit, left inguinal hernia’.
