George Adolph Lemke was born in Melbourne and was a Foreman by trade when he enlisted in the April 1917 Reinforcements on 5 February 1917 at the age of 25. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A72 Beltana on 16 June 1917 and sailed to England where he disembarked at Plymouth on August 25th. He served in England with the Australian Repair Section, AFC, and also spent time at the School of Technical Training at Reading. He returned home after the war, on the Kaiser-i-Hind, and disembarked at Melbourne on June 16th 1919, two years to the day after he sailed from Australia.
