Biography

Benjamin Joseph Scarfe was born in Millbrook, Victoria, was single and a Produce Merchant living in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 3rd Army Brigade as a Driver on 8 November 1916 at the age of 25. His unit embarked upon the HMAT Themistocles on 4 August 1917, disembarking at Glasgow on 2 October 1917. He proceeded overseas to France on 6 January 1918. Whilst in France he was wounded in action (unspecified) on 12 August 1918, re-joining his unit on 6 September 1918. By this time hostilities were drawing to an end and the armistice was signed on 11 November 1918. He returned to Australia from England on 20 April 1919.
