Albert Theodore Basten (SN 3627) born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on November 14th 1916. On May 11th 1917 he embarked aboard the Shropshire and sailed to England. In January 1918 he joined the 2nd Pioneer Battalion in France and served through the final year of the war avoiding serious illness or wounds. He returned to Australia aboard the Bakara, disembarked on September 27th 1919 and was discharged on November 4th.
