Hugh Curtis Clarkson (SN 34960) was born at Harcourt and was attending Melbourne University when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 30th 1917. Single and 19 years old, he joined the 6th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, embarking from Melbourne in November, and sailing via Suez to England. In April 1918 he crossed to France where he fell ill in late October, diagnosed with influenza. He was being treated at the UK 12th General Hospital when he died on November 4th 1918 of broncho-pneumonia, just one week before the signing of the Armistice. He is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, France.
