Ernest John Sprague was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Clerk when he enlisted with the Australian Flying Corps, 3rd Special Draft as a 2nd Air Mechanic on 27 February 1917 at the age of 18. His unit embarked for Liverpool, England on 28 February 1918 aboard the Nestor. According to his digitised records he completed his service without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia aboard the Kaiser-i-Hind on 6 May 1919.
