Biography

Hugh Ramsay Veitch was born in Ballarat and was a Warehouseman by trade when he enlisted in the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, Reinforcement 7 on 21 March 1917 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 4 August 1917. After a period in England, he arrived in France in March 1918 but almost immediately had health problems. He was hospitalised several times suffering from pyrexia (fever). He was then returned to Australia, departing England on Christmas Eve 1918 on the Takada and disembarking at Melbourne on February 11th 1919.
