Biography

Hedley David Tong-Way was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Clerk when he enlisted with the AIF on 28 May 1917 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 21 November 1917. According to his records he transferred between units during 1917/18, eventually being attached to the 5th Divisional Signal Company on 2 June 1919. He received a promotion to 2/Corporal before returning to Australia aboard the Nestor on 1 November 1919.
