Biography

William Gordon Wallis was born in Ballarat and was a Miner when he enlisted in the 29th Battalion, 1st Reinforcement on 26 July 1915 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915. He was with the 29th Battalion when he was wounded in action on October 24th 1916, sustaining gunshot wounds to both arms and a leg. He returned to Australia in March 1917.

He had two brothers that also served: Private Henry Matthew Wallis, 38th Battalion, returned to Australia, 30 April 1919 (Tree No. 3498); Driver Charles Austin Wallis, 5th Train Division, Returned to Australia 8 May 1919.
