Andrew John Phelan (SN 4673) born at Ballarat, was an 18 year old packer when he enlisted in Melbourne on June 8th 1917. As a reinforcement for the 8th Light Horse Regiment, he embarked from Sydney aboard the Port Darwin on April 30th 1918 and sailed to Egypt. While there he was hospitalised due to influenza then in June he accidentally fractured his lower leg. He was returned to Australia aboard the Malta, disembarked at Sydney on August 2nd 1919 and was discharged medically unfit on November 16th.
His brother William also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
