John Thomas Lewis was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the Field Artillery Brigade 2, Reinforcement 2 and Reinforcement 3 on 7 December 1914 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A45 Hessen on 2 February 1915. . While in Egypt he was admitted to the 15th General Hospital at Alexandria suffering from a disease. He was subsequently returned to Australia on the Ceramic, and on arrival at Melbourne on October 17th 1915, he was transferred to the Langwarrin Hospital. He was discharged in August 1916 as æmedically unfit'.
