William Robins was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement on 5 April 1916 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Orontes on 16 August 1916. He was wounded in action on 4 August 1917 with a severe gunshot wound to the left thigh which required amputation in November of that year. He remained in hospital until 23 January 1918 whereupon he was discharged, returning to Australia aboard the Dunluce Castle on 15 May 1919.
