Born in Ballarat, William Malcolm was a 21 year old grocer at the time of his enlistment on the 24th of October 1916. He was listed as being single at the time of his enlistment, but had his next of kin changed to his wife, Mrs. Claire Malcolm. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board RMS Omrah on the 17th of January 1917.
On the 30th of August 1918, William was wounded in action after being gassed. He embarked for England on the 3rd of September 1918 and on the 4th of September was admitted to Lord Derby War Hospital in Warrington, England.
He returned to Australia on the 2nd of March 1919 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 5th of October 1919.
