Biography

Howard Wellesley Boustead (SN 4433), from Dean, attended the Newlyn State School before taking up farming. He enlisted on July 29th 1915 and trained with the 8th Battalion until January 28th 1916 when he embarked aboard the Themistocles for service on the Western Front. He reached France in June, having transferred to the 58th Battalion, and in July he suffered a gunshot wound to his left ear. In October he was again hospitalised, this time with influenza, but was able to rejoin his unit in December. In May 1917, during fighting at Bullecourt, he was listed as missing in action, but a Court of Enquiry several months later determined that he had been killed in action on May 13th 1917. He was 25 years of age. He has no known grave and is listed on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and on the honour board of the Newlyn State School.
