Biography

James Alexander Stevens was born in Broken Hill, NSW and was a Draper in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 4th General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 3 August 1917 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board RMS Orontes on 5 June 1918 and disembarked at Liverpool in mid-August. He marched in to the 14th Training Battalion where he remained for the final three months of the war. He crossed to France in January 1919 and joined the 59th Battalion before being transferred to the Graves Registration Detachment. He returned to Australia on the Port Denison and disembarked at Melbourne on November 13th 1919.
