Robert Harold Vickers was born in Nelson, England, was married to Edith Vickers of 420 Doveton Street, Ballarat, Victoria and was a clerk when he enlisted with the Army Medical Corps, General Reinforcements on 4 August 1917 at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 10 June 1918. He fell ill early on with influenza, resulting in hospitalisation on 3 November 1918. During his time in hospital the armistice was signed, essentially ending the conflict in Europe. The remainder of his time of service went without major incident, illness or injury and he received his discharge from service, returning him to Australia aboard the Ceramic on 2 June 1920.
