Biography

Harold James Halson was born in Ballarat and was a Groom by trade when he enlisted in the 1st General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 27 September 1917 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A34 Persic on 21 March 1918. Upon reaching England he was transferred to the 21st Battalion, and in September he was moved to France. A month later, just three weeks before the war's end, he was moved to the 24th Battalion. After the war he remained in France until late May 1919, seven months after the Armistice. He returned to Australia on the Ulysses, disembarking at Melbourne on September 2nd 1919.
