Biography

William Tewes was born in Nort Strand, Denmark and was a Seaman by trade when he enlisted in the Field Artillery Brigade, Reinforcement 35 on 22 October 1917 at the age of 35. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board SS Port Darwin on 30 April 1918 and reached Southampton on July 16th. In October, just a month before the end of the war, he crossed to France attached to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade. After the war he returned home on the Miltiades, reaching Melbourne on August 5th 1919, by which time his wife had moved to Humffray Street, Ballarat.
