Biography

Frederick James Bennetts (SN 1511) born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old printer when he enlisted in Melbourne on December 10th 1914. He embarked aboard the Runic on February 25th 1915 and sailed to Egypt. Just a few days after the landing, he joined the 7th Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli and served there for four months until tonsilitis forced his evacuation. He rejoined his unit in France in December 1916 and served there until he was gassed in August 1918. He returned to Australia aboard the Karmala, disembarked at Melbourne on February 15th 1919 and was discharged on May 26th ‘medically unfit, gas poisoning’.
