George Richard Bowers was born in Ballarat and was a Carpenter by trade when he enlisted in the Australian Ordnance Corps (Inspector Ordnance Machinery Section) on 19 November 1917 at the age of 38. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 5 January 1918. He spent six months in England, based at Woolwich, before being moved to France in late September for the final weeks of the war. He left England in September 1919 on the Port Denison and disembarked at home on November 13th.
