Edgar Spencer Still Uren was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Railway signalman when he enlisted with the 2nd General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 15 December 1917 at the age of 30. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 1 May 1918. His records are brief, and other than an issue of absenting himself without leave on 10 January 1918 (for which he was awarded forfeiture of 4 days' pay) it appears he completed his service without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia from Liverpool on 2 August 1919.
