Biography

Harold 'Harry' Leonard Leeden (SN 61180) was a 20 year old draper from Dytes Parade Ballarat East when he enlisted on January 3rd 1918. He trained at the Recruit Depot at Broadmeadows before embarking from Melbourne on the Barambah on August 31st . By the time he reached England on November 14th 1918, the Armistice had already been signed. He was attached first to the 6th Battalion then transferred to the Australian Army Medical Corps. He was hospitalised for a period with influenza before he left England in December 1919. En route to Australia he was hospitalised with pleurisy, but disembarked at Melbourne on January 27th 1920 and was discharged soon after.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Harry L. Leedon.
