James Ralph Ward was born in Pitfield, VIC and was a Bootmaker in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 9th General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 26 January 1918 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A37 Barambah on 31 August 1918 and was twice admitted to the ship's hospital during the voyage, suffering from tonsillitis then influenza. He disembarked at London on November 14th 1918, three days after the war ended. He crossed to France towards the end of January 1919 and served there with the Australian Army Postal Corps. He returned to Australia on the Suevic and disembarked at Melbourne on September 10th 1919.
