Charles Cunningham (SN 3228) was born in Ballarat where he was working as an engineer at the time of his enlistment on February 23rd 1918. The 18 year old joined the Australian Flying Corps and trained at Laverton as an air mechanic, before catching the train to Sydney in May, where he embarked for England on board the Osterley. On arrival at Liverpool in July, he was posted to the AFC Depot in Buckinghamshire where he served the remainder of the war. His service passed without major incident and he returned to Australia on board the Kaiser-i-Hind in May 1919. He was discharged on July 1st 1919.
