Biography

John Edward Francis Hewitt was born in Ballarat and was a Clerk by trade when he enlisted in the 10th General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 25 February 1918 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A37 Barambah on 31 August 1918. He disembarked in England as the war was coming to an end, and his service was limited to bases in the United Kingdom. He did suffer an injury however when, on April 26th 1919, his foot was run over by a wagon resulting in a crush injury to the tip of his big toe. He returned to Australia on the Friedrichruh, reaching Melbourne on March 9th 1920.
