Donald Stewart Ross was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Bank Clerk when he enlisted in the 15th General (Victorian) Reinforcements on 1 April 1918 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A36 Boonah on 22 October 1918. However, the armistice was signed a month later on 11 November, essentially bringing the war to an end.
